Is Ketamine Safe?

We were all saddened to hear of Matthew Perry’s passing. He was loved by many and admired for his talent as an actor. His autopsy reported he died from the acute effects of ketamine. The ketamine level found in his blood is equivalent to a dose used in general anesthesia.

Are pools safe? In America, every year, there are 4,000 Americans who die of drowning. It is the leading cause of death for children 1 to 4 and one of the leading causes of death for children overall.

Are bicycles safe? According to the National Safely Council, 1230 people died in 2021 from bicycle accidents.
Are opiates safe? In the United States, 44 people die every day on prescription opiates. That is not counting deaths from street use or recreational use which brings the number up to 80,411 deaths in 2021. This is a scary number.

Ketamine IS safe. In our clinic, we administer it according to the studies which show the most effective range for treatment of mood disorders and pain. We follow the studies and the guidelines. Those that receive ketamine infusions are monitored continuously. Trained staff track blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory status and oxygen saturation as well as level of sedation with each infusion. We have the necessary equipment in our clinic for emergency use should it be needed. Our staff is trained in ketamine administration and certified in CPR and ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support).

Historically, ketamine has been around since the 1960’s. It is a powerful pain reliever and has been used in anesthesia for years. Ketamine rarely causes death, but large doses can increase blood pressure, heart rate and dissociation. For peace of mind, make sure you go to a reputable clinic where the staff are experienced using ketamine and proper screening and protocols are in place.
