What is Ketamine?

In 2000, Yale University studies showed that small doses of ketamine can be effective when it comes to treating symptoms of certain mental disorders such as depression. As an FDA-approved medication for anesthesia, ketamine is used daily within operating rooms and emergency rooms throughout the world for sedation as well as pain relief.

It’s believed that ketamine plays a role in the NMDA receptor blocking pattern, ketamine increases the level of glutamate between neuronal synapses. This helps to create a more optimal and healthy pathway that wasn’t possible before due to chronic, psychological, or certain pain conditions. This has proven to help ease the severity and symptoms that are often associated with these illnesses.

What is The Minimum Age For Treatment?

The minimum age for our professional ketamine treatment is strictly 16. However, some ketamine treatment centers have been known to see patients as young as 13 years old depending on the reason and severity of their treatment. Consulting with one of our specialists can help you decide when ketamine infusion is right for you or your loved one.

What Disorders Can Ketamine Infusions Treat?

When it comes to Ketamine infusion treatments, there are a variety of disorders that have been studied that ketamine treatments have been effective against. The following disorders have shown positive improvements when treated with ketamine infusion therapy.

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Migraines
  • Chronic Pain
  • CRPS (complex regional pain syndrome)
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Neuropathic Pain
  • OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)

Does Medicaid Cover Ketamine Therapy?

Unfortunately, Medicaid does not cover ketamine treatment sessions. However, the cost of treatments varies depending on your treatment frequency, and there may be specific financial plans that are available to help cover the cost of treatment.

What is Infusion Therapy For Depression?

Ketamine affects specific brain receptors that help control pain as well as your mood. When ketamine is introduced to the brain, it binds to these receptors and increases the amount of a neurotransmitter known as glutamate. This infusion helps balance your neurotransmitters and receptor chemicals resulting in decreased symptoms when it comes to depression. This helps increase your overall ability to accomplish everyday tasks such as work, socializing, and enjoying little things that the symptoms of depression have kept you from.

What is The Success Rate in Treating Depression?

While studies are ongoing when it comes to treating depression using ketamine, the current results show a 78% success rate when used to treat patients with depression, helping many reduce the severity of symptoms that are often associated with depression.

What Does Ketamine Infusion Feel Like?

Oftentimes ketamine treatments have been described as a dissociative experience. This means that many patients feel as though their brain is disconnected from their body. Many have reported things such as seeing colors or feeling as though they are floating above their body. Some patients say that the experience and feel are indescribable.

Can I Eat and/or Drink Before My Infusion?

For the best results during treatment, we require that you don’t eat for 4 hours before your infusion. It’s also required that you do not drink any liquids within 2 hours before your appointment so that you can achieve the best results from your ketamine infusion.

How Do I Know The Infusion Worked?

With ketamine treatments, results will typically be seen within 1-3 sessions. Within minutes of your treatment, suicidal ideation will decrease and your symptoms should gradually improve. There may be times when you feel sad, or depressed between treatments which is a normal part of the therapy. Overall, your depression symptoms should improve and you’ll notice that daily activities such as socializing and accomplishing everyday tasks will become easier gradually as you continue treatment.

How Long Will The Effects Last?

To sustain the effects of your ketamine treatments you’ll need to have follow-up treatments. Over time the effects wear off and it is recommended that you return for a booster 2-6 months after your initial series. Sustaining your ketamine treatments will allow you to enjoy the benefits that come along with ketamine infusion for longer periods, giving you the relief that you need by reducing your symptoms.

Is There Any Risk of Addiction To Ketamine Therapy?

Often abused as a party drug, there is a legitimate concern when it comes to ketamine addiction. However, when administered in low doses within a controlled environment such as our office, ketamine addiction has not been an issue. Within a controlled and monitored environment, all ketamine treatments are performed by an anesthesia professional to reduce the risk of ketamine addiction.

Are There Any Medications That Can Interfere With Ketamine Treatment?

Yes, and before starting your ketamine treatment you must talk with your prescriber to wean off of certain medications that can affect your treatment. Patients taking benzodiazepines such as alprazolam or clonazepam should wean off of these medications before starting ketamine therapy. Other medications such as Lamotrigine or Lamictal may also interfere with your ketamine treatments.

However, medications such as SSRIs,  SNRIs, lithium, Wellbutrin, and tricyclics (with caution) do not interfere with ketamine infusions.
