How is Ketamine Administered?

Ketamine can be administered intravenously, intramuscularly, intranasally, or orally. Typically, ketamine is administered intravenously for people with mental health conditions. This allows more control when delivering the treatment.

How Does Ketamine Work?

Ketamine has been shown to increase the production of a protein known as a brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Ketamine infusions work by blocking NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptors in your brain. Ketamine equates to a fertilizer for your brain cells. It causes neurogenesis and synaptogenesis, which is the formation of new brain cells and new connections between existing brain cells. That is why we recommend ketamine for depression, anxiety, and PTSD.

Am I a Suitable Candidate For Ketamine Therapy?

Ketamine can be used to treat mood disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. However, there are some people that should be excluded from using ketamine infusions. If you suffer from the following, you should not use ketamine infusion therapy:

Heart disease or poorly controlled blood pressure.

A history of psychotic disorders, such as schizophrenia.

Bipolar mood disorder.

Raised pressure inside your eyes.

Pregnant or breastfeeding.

Before making any hasty decisions and missing out on the great benefits that ketamine can offer you, schedule a consultation with us to discuss your suitability for ketamine infusion therapy.

What Dose of Ketamine is Administered During Ketamine Infusion Therapy?

The dose that is administered differs from person to person. Dosage will depend on the following:

Your mental status.

Your physiological status corresponds to your physical examination and blood tests.

Baseline cardiovascular status.

Typically, we administer a lower dose during the initial treatment. If an increase is necessary, we will do so accordingly.

Preparation For Ketamine Therapy

We recommend that you prepare yourself mentally and physically before your Ketamine treatment. The following should be noted:

The consumption of alcohol and illicit substances should be avoided the night before the ketamine infusion.

Any chronic medication should still be taken the night before and the morning of your treatment unless we advise you differently.

You should get a good night’s rest.

Because music plays an important role during your ketamine treatment, we recommend that you prepare a playlist of music that has significant meaning to you. This may also include meditation music or music for deep sleep.

Include a comfortable pair of noise-canceling headphones and an eye mask.

You should wear comfortable clothing to our ketamine treatment center.

It is recommended that you empty your bladder before your ketamine treatment.

The Ketamine Procedure

Before you proceed to your ketamine treatment, we will answer your questions and address any concerns you may have regarding the procedure. Following this phase, you will be taken to the infusion room to have your drip inserted in your hand or arm. This is a good time to use your eye mask and headphones.

During your ketamine treatment, monitors, such as saturation monitoring, blood pressure, ECG, pulse rate, and oxygen, will be available on hand. Although this is typically not required, supplemental oxygen can be administered via a nasal cannula if necessary.

The duration of your treatment session will vary according to how your body responds to the treatment. When the infusion phase is complete, and the ketamine is finished, you will feel the effects slowly wear off. You will gradually remove your eye mask and headphones to adjust to your surroundings.

After Your Ketamine Treatment

It is important to participate in hobbies and tasks you enjoy after your treatment. This may include painting, physical activity, DIY, or playing a musical instrument. Incorporate this into your daily routine for the first few days after your ketamine infusion therapy.

Physical activity is a great way to release natural endorphins. A half-hour of cardio 3-4 times a week is recommended as a start. Through the next few weeks, this should increase.

Meditation and mindfulness are also recommended to help you after your ketamine treatment. There are countless apps and programs that can be used to assist you.

How Many Ketamine Infusion Treatments Do I Need?

Your needs may differ from the next person. However, 2-3 infusions are typically required to gain desired results. These treatment sessions are spaced 7-10 days apart. Additionally, you can have maintenance infusion treatments every 3-6 months.
